I love honey!

Bees play an important role in any environment as plant pollinators. Within the Ghandruk area (2000-3000 m) the indigenous honeybees of the Himalayas are essential for the maintenance of the region's biodiversity and natural ecosystems. These hard working little friends occupy a key role in the pollination of mountain crops and consequently, contribute to food security and livelihoods of the Ghandruk rural households.

Regardless their fame, many threats contribute to the dissemination of the domestic honeybees around the world. Although one might think that "mountain bees" would be spared from these potential threats, a similar increase in colony mortality is already observed and now monitored within the ACA region.

Among these threats we observe a slow but steady shift towards monoculture practices. Limiting agriculture to one crop type contributes to loss of floral diversity (and Biodiversity) and is often responsible to increased use of pesticides. In addition to this major threat, increasing access to remote areas by trekkers, sadly, too often goes hand in hand with environmental degradation.

Here in Ghandruk, beekeeping is an integral part of the history of the rural development of the communities by improving food productivity and providing honey, wax and other products for home use and sale. This is particularly true for landless individuals who rely on trading and monetary exchanges to obtain basic necessities.

Ghandruk communities have been in the past and are even today relying on both honey hunting of the Himalayan wild bee's colonies to obtain honey and using log hives to produce honey by domestic or wild bees.


There are four groups of bees in Nepal:
  • bumble bees
  • sting-less bees
  • solitary bees
  • honeybees

According to Bahadur Gurung & al. (2012), five species of HONEYBEES are found in the Himalayas:

Little honeybee (Apis florea)
Giant honeybee (Apis dorsata)
Himalyan cliff bee (Apis laboriosa)
Asian / Indigenous hive bee (Apis cerana)

The Little honeybee (Apis florea) can be found in hills and plains at altitudes up to 1,200 m. These bees build single small comb nests under small tree branches or bushes. A colony can produce 1 kg of honey per year.

Their big sister, the Giant honeybee (Apis dorsata) is also fund in hills and plains but at lower altitudes up to 1,000 m. They usually build single large comb nests on the top of tall trees, buildings, or water towers. These big sisters are highly defensive and performs mass attacks. They also produce considerably more honey per year (30-50 kg per colony).

Similar to his cousin Apis dorsata, the Himalayan cliff bee (Apis laboriosa) is darker and more defensive. Not only they build larger single comb nests but also produce considerable more honey per year with an average of 60 kg per colony and prefers nesting on large steep rocky cliff faces.

The honey produced by the Himalayan cliff bee is highly prized and in Nepal, honey hunting is a vital part of the Nepali culture. However, health of these bee's populations are threatened by human disturbances and resulting habitats degradation. 

Finally, while walking around Ghandruk, one can find tree logs hanging on the side of houses. When the sun shine and temperature rises, all these little workers get down to work. Apis cerana (Asian or indigenous hive bee) is the only bee that can be kept in these hand crafted log hives.

They differentiate themselves from their cousins by building multiple parallel combs (number depends on the colony size) and by establishing themselves in plains and hills from below 300 m up to 3,400 m.These bees can produce up to 20 kg of honey per hive per year and are resistant to diseases and mites, main culprit of the European honeybee populations dissemination worldwide.
In Ghandruk, the European honeybee (Apis mellifera) was introduced for commercial beekeeping as it builds multiple parallel combs and can be keep in movable frame hives.

POUR MA FAMILLE ET MES AMIS FRANCOPHONES



La nature ce n'est pas que pour les écolos!

Il faut bien se nourrir, se loger, se chauffer, se déplacer, respirer... Il nous est possible de combler toutes ses nécessités tant et aussi longtemps que les ressources nécessaires soient disponibles sur notre planète.

Curieuse, ma soif de savoir et de comprendre les interrelations entre environnements physique, biologique et culturel que composent nos milieux de vie à définitivement orientée ma carrière professionnelle, dédiée à l'environnement depuis plus de 15 ans.


Aussi, c'est avec enthousiasme que je m'embarque dans un projet d'écovolontariat dans les montagnes himalayennes.

L'aventure à déjà débutée avec la préparation du projet cependant, le départ pour Katmandou aura lieu le 1er octobre 2014. Le projet, d'une durée de 8 semaines, est réalisé dans la région de Ghandruk au cœur des Annapurna. Ghandruk est une des 7 régions de conservation de l'Annapurna Conservation Area


Le site couvre 7 629 mètres carrés et compte plus de 100 000 habitants aux cultures et langues différentes. L'endroit est riche en biodiversité et compte quelques 1 226 espèces de fleurs et plantes, 102 mammifères, 474 oiseaux, 39 reptiles et 22 amphibiens.

Avec pour objectif premier de préserver et d'accroître les ressources naturelles de la région tout en aidant au développement social des villages, ma participation s'articulera autour de l'observation d'espèces sauvages et de leurs habitats. Selon les besoins, je pourrai contribuer à des projets de reforestation et d'énergies alternatives.

My VOLUNTEERING PROJECT


In short, Projects Abroad works in partnership with the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) with the overall aim to enhance and preserve Biodiversity within the Ghandruk region (one of the 7 Unit Conservation Offices - UCO). Furthermore, the management authority of this significant area is undertaken by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC).







As illustrated in these NTNC maps, the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) is the largest protected area of Nepal. Its biogeography shapes the wide range of landuse/covers founded across the region. Diverse cultures and associated traditions and dialects complete this colorful environment. DIVERSITY definitively characterize the region and provide the increasing number of visitors with a unique travel experience. 

Tourism Industry can be favorable for social development when it occurs in a sustainable manner. This is why, in order to "achieve sustained balance between nature conservation and socio-economic improvement in the (ACA), thereby assist National Trust for Nature Conservation in achieving its goal," three objectives are identified by the ACAP:
  • Conserve the natural resources of ACA for the benefit of present and future generations.
  • Bring sustainable social and economic development to the local people.
  • Develop tourism in such a way that it will have minimum negative impact on the natural, socio-cultural and economic environments.

The spectacular natural beauty of this region is composed of diverse but also, of fragile ecosystems. When investing in Biodiversity preservation and conservation, the resulting impact on local communities living from and within those environments is often discarded. In this regard, not only the inhabitants continue to live and access the natural resources within the Ghandruk region, in addition, the ACA project support and improve the quality of life of the local people. ACAP recognizes that effective conservation of natural resources cannot be realized without the active participation of the local communities in all stages of development from planning to implementation and evaluation.

In the same line of thought, the overall aim of Projects Abroad in the Ghandruk region is to enhance and preserve biodiversity through a combination of scientific research and community engagement. This is where I will be contributing. 

As a volunteer on this Conservation and Environment Project, I might get involved in a wide variety of activities such as:
  • Wildlife Research: As with any conservation area it is vital to monitor the populations of wild animals. This is done through various census techniques and using camera traps. Strong emphasis is placed on researching threatened and endangered species.
  • Natural Resource Management: Afforestation, soil and water conservation, and building and maintaining nursery projects are vital for conservation.
  • Alternative Energy Projects: We work with remote villages to help manage their impact on their local environment through projects such as solar, micro-hydro, and biogas power supplies and improved cooking stoves.
  • Community Infrastructure Development: We assist with sanitation and drainage programs which help reduce human conflict with the natural environment.
  • Conservation Education: Running workshops and events in the local community.
  • Agriculture and Livestock Development: Reducing wildlife conflict with humans, anti–poaching, and seed management are all programs that need to be managed so that villages in these areas can sustain themselves without compromising the local flora and fauna.

More in depth details in regards to the tasks I will be fulfilling will be provided in the coming months based on current needs and project progress.
